06 Growing peppers Coachella Valley Workers remove the paper shielding from young bell pepper plants, taking it out of the field to be burned. Farmworkers like this young man are increasingly immigrating from Oaxaca, Chiapas and southern Mexico, even Guatamala and Central America. Many speak no Spanish, only the native language of their indigenous people. Two and three decades ago farmworkers were largely mestizo, and immigrated from the states of central Mexico. |
