58 Colombia - Las Balsas

Luciano Caravali, an 81-year-old wood carver. Afro-Colombian and indigenous Columbians live in a community threatened by large scale development projects, including a gold mining complex and the flooding of valleys by dams and hydroelectric projects. Las Balsas was the scene of a massacre in 2005 by Colombia's paramilitary and groups who protect the projects, and who seek to push communities here off their land.
