81 Colombia - Palo Blanco

Nimia Agrono, a small scale gold miner in Palo Blanco, grinds gold-bearing rock to extract the ore. Afro-Colombian and indigenous Columbians live in a community threatened by large scale development projects, including a gold mining complex and the flooding of valleys by dams and hydroelectric projects. Buenos Aires was the scene of a massacre in 2001 by Colombia's paramilitary and groups who protect the projects, and who seek to push communities here off their land.
