Day of the Dead 20 Oaxaca On the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), Oaxacans build altars to the dead, and dress as skeletons in costumes. Groups of students, or different communities, make offerings of sand and flowers in the streets and plazas. A large percentage of the residents of Oaxaca have left to work in the United States, where the same celebrations take place in Mexican barrios. Previous
