09 San Franciso Protest of SB 1070
Immigrants and community activists in protest against cooperation between police and immigration agents in arresting people for deportation in the office of California Attorney Jerry Brown. Brown, a candidate for governor, ruled that San Francisco could not opt out of this program, called Secure Communities. The program would invalidate San Francisco's sanctuary city ordinance. The demonstratiors also protested against Arizona's SB 1070, which would make being undocumented a state crime there, on the day the law took effect. The day prior Federal Judge Susan Bolton invalidated much of the law, but demonstrations of thousands of people took place against the law around the country nevertheless. Protestors went to Jerry Brown's office and told one of his assistants about their objections to his action. Renee Saucedo, of La Raza Centro Legal, led the delegation.
