AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, when he was still campaigning to become head of America's labor federation, came to Salinas to show he meant business in supporting the United Farm Workers and efforts by unions to organize low-wage immigrant workers. UFW President Arturo Rodriguez became one of his strongest supporters.
