23 1997 march Watsonville The 1997 strawberry season started in classic UFW style, with a march. People poured in from as far as Texas and Wisconsin. It was a day when even white coal miners and African-American ministers learned a little Spanish. "We are all freseros [strawberry pickers]," AFL-CIO secretary-treasurer Rich Trumka, a West Virginia miner's son, told a cheering crowd. |
